I’m Betsy Gilpin, LCPC, LCMHC, a trauma-informed therapist offering kink-affirming and polyamory-friendly therapy for adults in Holly Springs, NC and virtually across North Carolina and Illinois. I work with individuals and partners navigating anxiety, trauma, identity exploration, relationship dynamics, and the unique challenges that can come with consensual non-monogamy and alternative relationship structures.
Many of my clients are thoughtful, self-aware adults who are tired of feeling misunderstood in traditional therapy spaces. You may be navigating communication struggles, jealousy, boundaries, or the impact of past trauma on your relationships. You might also be holding the weight of stigma, masking parts of yourself, or questioning how to fully show up as your authentic self.
My approach is sex-positive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and grounded in respect, curiosity, and collaboration. I integrate evidence-based therapies like EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to help you process past experiences, regulate your nervous system, and create meaningful, lasting change—without judgment or shame.
I offer both ongoing therapy and therapy intensives, providing flexible options for deeper, focused work. Whether you’re exploring your identity, strengthening your relationships, or healing from past experiences, therapy can be a space where all parts of you are welcome.

I intend to help you feel more aware, empowered & capable. I will bring ideas, experiments, and insights, with a spirit of open and nonjudgmental kindness. We will work together to understand why you’re experiencing the issue and seek to heal, not just cope. I believe that the most effective therapeutic relationship is built on two-way trust and honesty. Our exploration will be conscious of our social locations and how environment and structural forces influence and shape you, as well as how we relate to one another.
I am an EMDR therapist who has published a peer-reviewed journal article and presented at a major industry conference in 2021 on the topic. I have a history working with the LGBTQ+ community, particularly trans and poly persons, as well as the BIPOC community, individuals navigating trauma, ADHD, career and school issues, college students, academics, professionals, elders, therapists, and couples. Clients of all shapes, sizes, identities, backgrounds, and beliefs are welcome and affirmed. In therapy lingo, I tend to use psychodynamic, mindfulness and cognitive approaches, with a base in liberation psychotherapy theory.
I am a passionately curious person, seeking to understand, explore, and support the people and places around me. My room has books in every crevice and corner! When I’m not inside reading or watching a movie, I may be found outside listening to the birds, appreciating the trees, or inside filling my space with sage, essential oils, or candles. I identify as a white, Jewish, English-speaking, cisgender male who works to be antiracist, antipatriarchal, trans-affirming, and LGBTQ+-affirming. I would love the opportunity to work with My rate is $160 with sliding scale opportunities.

Therapeutic Philosophy & Process - My therapeutic philosophy is based on the principle that the relationship between the counsellor and the patient is essential to work that feels sustaining and supportive. I draw from many places to support my practice, including clinical evidence-based modalities (such as Internal Family Systems, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or EMDR), community care, and individual and collective experience. As a social worker, my praxis is based on principles of social justice and systems theories rather than the psychological model of individualizing and medicalizing interconnected human experiences. I work with patients in a collaborative nature, recognizing that the patient is the expert of themselves and my role is one of artificial “power-over”; I strive to renegotiate those hierarchies and co-create a relationship based on “power-with”. In couples and relational therapy, I am committed to creating a safe and affirming space for all relationships, including Queer relationships, non-monogamous partnerships, and those exploring or well versed in kink. My approach is grounded in a social work perspective, emphasizing inclusivity, social justice, and the importance of understanding the broader social and cultural contexts that impact relationships. My role is to help you explore your relationship(s) in a way that honors your identities, desires, and boundaries. Sexual health and wellness are crucial components of a fulfilling relationship. I work with couples to enhance their sexual connection, address any challenges, and empower each partner to express their sexual needs and preferences openly and without judgment. I work with people aged 18 and older.

I provide secure telehealth therapy for adults, couples, and polycules across California. I work with people navigating polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, open relationships, relationship anarchy, and other consensual non-monogamous relationship structures.
I live openly as polyamorous, and I bring a non-pathologizing but honest approach to this work. Polyamory or ENM is not treated as the problem. At the same time, therapy can be a place to look carefully at what is working, what is hurting, what needs repair, and what may need to change.
Common areas of focus include:
My approach is relational, systems-informed, thoughtful, and engaged. I help clients slow down enough to understand what is happening, clarify boundaries, notice patterns, and make more intentional choices. I am not here to push a particular relationship model. The goal is to help you better understand what is true, workable, ethical, and sustainable for your life and relationships.
I also have a focused practice supporting Jewish clients navigating antisemitism, identity, belonging, safety, and community. For clients at the intersection of Jewish life and ENM/polyamory, therapy may also include questions about family, community visibility, religious or cultural belonging, political tension, safety, and what it means to build relationships that are both honest and livable.
I work with adults, couples, and polycules. Sessions are offered by telehealth for clients located anywhere in California.
If you’re looking for therapy with someone who understands polyamory and ENM from both lived and clinical perspectives, you’re welcome to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation to see whether working together feels like a good fit.

We all carry pain. This pain can come from many places. For many of us as queer people, it may come from navigating the world with one or more stigmatized identities, or simply from our broader lived experiences. I see therapy as an opportunity to understand and connect to your inner self, your identities, and your pain. I aim for you to feel seen, heard, and held, and for you to see that you, with all your complexities and pain, are whole and enough, just as you are. We will attend to areas of struggle and celebrate your already existing areas of strength. In this way, we can work together to ease the burden of the pain you carry and find relief and healing. To feel joy, as well as pain, is our humanity.
The central tenet of my approach to our work together is mutual curiosity. Together, you and I will co-create a space where you can gain a better understanding of all the different parts of you, where you can discover and grow, and unlearn and shed those things which may not suit your growth, and where you can be both held and challenged with care and compassion.
My therapeutic approach is integrative, meaning I pull from different lenses depending on what feels most helpful in the moment. We can utilize a psychodynamic approach to understand how your past experiences may impact you in the present, a cognitive behavioral approach to build awareness around and change unconscious thought patterns that no longer serve you, or a systems approach to acknowledge the impact family, cultural, and institutional systems may have on your life. Overlaying all this, I approach our work together with authenticity, humor, and warmth.
Tapping into the vulnerability therapy requires isn’t easy, but you are here, already having taken the first huge step in this process. Good for you. Let’s explore together.

The foundation of my therapy is to create a safe, non-judgemental space for the client to discover their inherent wisdom and healing potential. The relationships I build with clients are based on empathy and respect for the client’s unique process. The human self is not a static entity. We are always unfolding and becoming, in each moment.
Sometimes, trauma cuts us off from this process of unfolding. Many of us have learned maladaptive coping strategies in response to traumatic environments. Later in life, this may lead us to become “stuck” in self-destructive habits or unhealthy relationships. We may hold trauma in the body, which keeps us constricted and disconnected from the world around us.
I focus on empowering clients to break out of those patterns and live fuller lives.
I help clients develop skills to manage overwhelming emotions, through mindfulness, self-care and nurturing connections with others. My goal is not just to provide tools for clients to manage problems, but rather, to help them develop an internal sense of strength and resiliency.
My primary focus, in therapy, is on the here-and-now. I use techniques of mindfulness and body awareness to deepen understanding of emotions, and how they affect human connection in the present moment. I also teach meditation practices for relaxation and anxiety management. These may include breathing and visualization exercises. I work with clients to discover meditation practices that suit their unique needs.
I have a background in both Transpersonal and Existential psychotherapy. I support the client’s freedom to find their own source of meaning in their lives. I honor each client’s unique spiritual path, and create safe space for diverse religious traditions. I collaborate with clients to create their own rituals to honor life transitions, empower themselves, process grief and move beyond trauma. I have a real passion for exploring dreams with clients, drawing influence from both Gestalt and Jungian dream work.
I specialize in working with the LGBT and Poly community. I work with individuals of all genders and sexual orientations.
